2.Face condition: radial heat cracks, deep radial scoring, edge chipping or obvious uneven wear
Replacing only the graphite ring while keeping a damaged hard face is a common mistake — light damage on the hard face imprints onto the new graphite ring. Evaluate and replace the friction pair as a set.
2. Tools and How to Use Them
2.1 Optical Flat
The optical flat is the standard flatness tool. Press it on a clean, dry face and read the interference fringes:
- Straight, evenly spaced fringes: flatness acceptable
- Curved or closed-loop fringes: flatness out of tolerance; one fringe order is roughly 0.0003mm, and sealing-grade flatness requires within 0.0009mm
- The contact bright band should be a continuous closed narrow ring; a broken or off-center band means tilt or uneven wear
2.2 Micrometer and Depth Gauge
- A micrometer measures ring axial thickness; compare with the original record to get wear depth — 0.01mm resolution is enough
- A depth gauge or dial indicator measures face sinking relative to a datum, useful for in-place estimation without disassembly
- For batch checks, a dedicated go/no-go gauge set to the wear limit speeds judgment
3. Face Appearance Checklist
- Continuous narrow bright band: normal wear, continue in service
- Fine radial cracks: thermal shock (flush failure or cycling) — replace even if wear is within limits
- Radial scoring: solids in media or particles introduced at assembly — check flush and filtration
- Edge chipping: runout out of limits or impact during fitting — check the shaft system
- Off-center band: installation misalignment — reassemble and re-verify flatness
4. Timing and the Wear Log
1.Planned replacement: list for the next shutdown when wear reaches 80% of the limit, avoiding unplanned stops
2.Pair replacement: change graphite and mating hard face together; re-verify flatness with an optical flat before fitting
3.Keep a log: record running hours and wear depth per ring; two or three points extrapolate linearly to the next window — more accurate than any rule-of-thumb interval
4.Replacing after leakage is the worst option: late-stage film imbalance damages the hard face and secondary seals too, doubling repair cost
